I know we have had the electoral college for as long as this great country has been created, but over time it has gotten to the point where some changes need to be made. The number of electoral votes per state should be revisited, because it seems even the well populated states receive so much more representation then the smaller states, it's almost not giving these small sates a say in the government. I feel that with a reform in this system there will be a better voter turn out, because giving small states more votes make the citizens of that state feel more empowered and are more likely to go out and vote. The Electoral College makes it where candidates running for president will only campaign in certain big states, and swing states. Swing states are states that usually "swing" back in forth between parties and aren't historically only voting one way. This gives the candidates the opportunity and knowledge just to campaign in these states, giving these state more publicity and funds then the other states. It also discourages the citizens of states not being campaigned as much as the swing states because it is as if they're votes wont matter in the long run, that it's not represented equally to citizens living in a larger state. Citizens of a larger state could also argue that citizens of a smaller state's vote actually weighs more then theirs because with the smaller population each vote is weighed heavier then if the citizen was from a more populated state. So as you can see each vote is not actually "equal" and the country needs to do something about it as a whole. The reason why America uses this system is back before it was easy to communicate over long distances of land, the founding fathers of this country was worried that a corrupt man would run for office, and the people of America would not be politically aware that this man would be incapable of running a country and elect him. So they made the Electoral College be the only votes that mattered for a candidate to win the presidency, sort of as a check for the system so that politically aware people would elect the commander and chief of America. With the invention of the internet and television it is very easy to be informed which side the candidates take in many disputes and their ideas, so the majority of America's voting population should be politically aware and capable of voting for who they want as citizens of this country in a direct election.Yes a direct vote, make all votes equal and have the candidate with the majority of the votes win. This should help voter turnout especially in states that normally only vote for one party, now the losing candidates can still receive help in hopes of becoming the president with the votes as a whole instead of maybe losing by a few hundred votes and lose the state and all the Electoral votes to the competition. It has happened in history where a president has lost the majority vote in America but one the Electoral votes and became president. The most recent election where this occurred would be the 2000 election where the democrat running for presidency won the popular vote, but in fact lost the electoral vote to his counterpart of the republican party. That doesn't make sense to have this set up, where if everyone's vote is suppose to be created equal you can still have a canidate lose who has the majority of votes of the people.

Polls have shown that lawyers and citizens of America have voted to abolish the Electoral College in the past 50 years with still no change(What proposals have been made to change the Electoral College, Archives.gov) polling showed 69 percent of lawyers favored abolishing it in 1987. But surveys
of political scientists have supported continuation of the Electoral College.
Public opinion polls have shown Americans favored abolishing it by majorities of
58 percent in 1967; 81 percent in 1968; and 75 percent in 1981. That is insane to have that much of the mjority wanting to abolish it complety and still stick with the same system. This electoral college winner take all scenario really hurts any 3rd party candidate running for office if their votes are very spread out they might end up getting absolutly no votes or recognition for the Electoral College.(Geekpolitics.com, The Way It Really Is).

So with both apolitical and political citezens wanting to abolish the Electoral College, why not abolish it? It ends up helping everyone out, making a clear cut winner by the popular vote that any educated or uneducated people dealing with politics can see. The Electoal College needs to go, and it needs to go now.
